Press Statement

The resolution adopted by the Plenary of the European Parliament on 8 July 2026 on "the impact of the 1974 intervention on Cypriot women and girls", prepared under the rapporteurship of a Greek Member of the European Parliament, has once again revealed the one-sided approach and biased stance of the European Parliament regarding the Cyprus issue and the events in Cyprus, which follows its recent resolution on the issue of missing persons.

The purpose served by the timing of this resolution is clear. This resolution, adopted on the eve of the 52nd anniversary of the 20 July 1974 Peace and Freedom Day and at a time when efforts to build trust between the two peoples and to achieve a lasting settlement have intensified, clearly reveals the purpose it serves. Rather than contributing to reconciliation, such provocative initiatives cause serious harm to efforts towards a settlement by preventing the establishment of an environment of trust.

This resolution, which represents an attempt by the European Parliament to reconstruct history for political purposes through a biased approach, together with the one-sided process followed in its adoption, serves no purpose other than to undermine the credibility, integrity and the likelihood of the European Parliament that its decisions will be taken seriously.
