President Erhürman: Confidence-Building Measures and Methodology were the main topics of the meeting

President Tufan Erhürman issued a written statement following the tête-à-tête meeting with the Greek Cypriot Leader today (Wednesday).

The statement by President Tufan Erhürman is as follows:

“The meeting today lasted an hour, with the main topics being Confidence-Building Measures and Methodology.

Whilst no agreement could be reached on new Confidence-Building Measures during the greater part of the meeting, we conveyed our views on external and internal actions that are further eroding what little trust remains.

We emphasised that, if we are to move the process forward, it is important to create the conducive climate referred to by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. To achieve this, new Confidence-Building Measures need to be implemented, whilst actions that erode trust should be avoided.

The Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, will not be able to visit the island before the United Nations General Assembly High-level Week for health reasons. 

The next meeting will most likely take place in approximately one week, in the absence of Ms. Holguín.”

The leaders will meet in the buffer zone at 11.00am on Thursday, 17 September.
