Birkan Uzun Memorial Forest to be inaugerated under the auspices of the Presidency
A Memorial Forest is to be inaugerated under the auspices of the Presidency for Turkish Cypriot Birkan Uzun who tragically passed away following a skiing accident in Oregon, US, on January 1, 2022.
President Ersin Tatar, who described Mr Uzun, 28, as a legend and an inspiration for Turkish Cypriot youth due to his academic, professional and mountaineering successes, instructed for a section of the Presidential Forest near Tepebaşı, to be allocated in Birkan Uzun's name and memory.
An inaugeration ceremony and tree planting event, which will be attended by President Ersin Tatar at the Memorial Forest, will be held on Thursday, March 3, at 10am.
Mr Uzun, who had completed his objective to hold the TRNC flag at the highest mountain peaks of the world under his ‘7 Continents, 7 Summits’ project, had last successfully climbed the Vinson Massif summit of Antarctica, on December 16, 2021.
An invitation has been extended to the public who wish to attend the event to plant tree saplings – which will be provided by the Forestry Department.
