First Lady Sibel Tatar addresses the opening ceremony of an arts exhibition marking 8 March International Women’s Day

“It is very meaningful that Girne Mediterranean Lions Club has combined art work with charity.”

First Lady Sibel Tatar has participated in the opening ceremony of painting exhibition titled “Breezes in Women XIII” (Kadında Esintiler XIII), organised by the Girne Mediterranean Lions Club to mark the 8 March International Women’s Day.

In her address at the opening ceremony of the exhibition at the Lefkoşa Atatürk Cultural Centre on Thursday, First Lady Tatar stated: “I pay tribute to the hard-working women in our country and across the world for their accomplishments and wish to stress the importance of addressing gender discrimination, as well as promoting support to women across different walks of life.”
Stating that “this exhibition, which we are today opening by marking 8 March International Women’s Day, features beautiful paintings by our women that, I hope, will inspire many others to becoming successful in their lives.  I also commend the Girne Mediterranean Lions club for organising this exhibition, the proceeds of which will be donated to healthcare.”
Underlining that “art has a unifying power,” First Lady Tatar stressed that “it is very meaningful for Girne Mediterranean Lions Club has combined art with charity work”.

First Lady Tatar added: “Acting with kindness should be a behaviour that is not only contagious, but an example of excellence to other members of society.  Helping different charities through work of art is a fantastic example of how success can come about by organising these sorts of exhibitions, which also raises awareness on different issues in our country. Women achieve important successes when they work together.”

Congratulating those who have participated in the art exhibition, First Lady Tatar added: “It is important that we see more women enter different sectors, and contribute to our society in the political, economic and cultural areas. We want to see more women in better places.”

Sibel Tatar pointed out that although women are generally valued in our country, “they should be given more opportunities to progress across different areas and sectors, such as in business life, bureaucracy and parliament”.
“We hosted a dinner meeting at the Presidency where discussions were held on the difficulties faced by disabled women and disabled mothers, whilst marking 8 March International Women’s Day,” First Lady Tatar said. “The discussions revealed that society has a high degree of insensitivity about disabled individuals, which needs to be tackled,” she added.
Sibel Tatar pointed out that education should be provided in schools from a young age to increase awareness on disabled people, and emphasised that the studies and efforts should not be limited to just a few, but should be announced to large masses through the use of the media.
First Lady Sibel Tatar thanked the Girne Mediterranean Lions Club for organising the exhibition and all women painters for their involvement and participation.
