First Lady Sibel Tatar has commemorated March 8 International Women’s Day by visiting Salise Talaş and Serap Derim, to express her gratitude and appreciation towards women labourers who have shaped the country’s economy and business life.
In order to mark the occasion, Sibel Tatar presented a plaque each to Salise Talaş and Serap Derim and wished them success in their future endeavours.
Salise Talaş
The eldest child of a family of six children, she was born on October 12, 1947, in the village of Yayla, in the district of Paphos. At the age of 12, she learned to weave baskets from her mother and she started a basket weaving business at her parents' house until she got married. After marriage, she continued to weave and expanded the business with her husband and made it a career. Later, her husband started to work in another field, but she continued this business in order to help finance the domestic budget, and she continues to weave baskets in the village of Yayla.
Serap Derim
She was born on November 5, 1958 in Cihangir, and graduated from the sewing academy of the Girls' Vocational High School, she has employed nearly 40 female tailors in the sewing workshop that she opened in her own name after her marriage, and she still manages the workshop. She is passionate about helping disabled children, believes that many more children need to be helped, and she continues to work in this direction, being inspired by her own two children who are deaf.
