First Lady Sibel Tatar together with the Girne based organisations affiliated to the Northern Cyprus Women's Organisations Network, visited Mayor of Girne, Nidai Güngördü
“Economic freedom of women is the most important factor in preventing all kinds of violence against women”
First Lady Sibel Tatar and nine women's organisations operating in Girne visited the town's Mayor Nidai Güngördü.
In her speech during the visit, First Lady Sibel Tatar gave information regarding the Northern Cyprus Women's Organisations Network, which has been set up recently. Expressing that the formation of the organisation was finalised on November 25, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the First Lady stated that there were a series of decisions taken with meetings with 40 organisations.
Sibel Tatar pointed out that women's economic freedom is the most significant factor in preventing all kinds of violence against women. Pointing out that women's economic power is an important phenomenon that will protect women against violence and all kinds of dangers, Sibel Tatar underlined that the revival of women's lost power in the economy will also contribute to the country's economy.
“Women have the ability to successfully realise invaluable productions that will contribute to the economy”
Sibel Tatar stated that she personally witnessed that the women of the country have the ability to successfully realise invaluable productions that will contribute to the economy and stated that there is a need for a place where women in the Northern Cyprus Women's Organisations Network can exhibit what they produce.
Stating that they determined that the old municipal market building of Girne Municipality would be a suitable place for these exhibitions, First Lady Sibel Tatar presented the petition containing the signatures of the Northern Cyprus Women's Organisations to Mayor Güngördü. She expressed that she believed the Mayor of Girne and the municipal council members would make a decision in favour of women and labour regarding a place where the products, produced by the women, would be exhibited.
The following statements were included in the petition submitted to the Municipality of Girne by the Northern Cyprus Women's Organisations Network, whose formation was completed under the auspices of the Presidency and under the leadership of First Lady Sibel Tatar:
“The historical Bandabuliya (Municipal Market) building, which is in your use, is one of the great values of our country. Our associations want to bring this historical structure back to the society with a common action for operating it for the benefit of the public. For this purpose, we would like to request that the Bandabuliya be used by our women's associations with a protocol we will make."
“Handcrafts need to be developed and united under one roof”
Nidai Güngördü drew attention to the importance of non-governmental organisations as a part of participatory municipalism and touched upon the necessities of daily and economic life and stated that economic and daily life should not be indexed only to tourists and students.
Mayor Güngördü also drew attention to the necessity of developing handicrafts and combining them under one roof. Noting that the Turkish Cypriot people should continue to produce, he expressed his pleasure regarding the visit of the First Lady Sibel Tatar and her accompanying delegation to the Municipality of Girne.
Mr Güngördü expressed that he would be happy for possible cooperation to be consulted during the visit.
