The event, which was held on Sunday, April 9, was attended by hundreds of people, KAV volunteers and its Turkish Cypriot founder Dr. Mustafa Djamgöz, Emeritus Professor of Cancer Biology at Imperial College London and Chairman of the College of Medicine’s Science Council. Also in attendance were other ministers and civil organisations as well as Fevzi Tanpınar of Telsim, which was the main sponsor of the event.
Addressing the event that was attended by hundreds of people at the Dilekkaya Forest Area, President Tatar paid tribute to the organisers, volunteers, members of the public and members of the expat community for “once again showing such strong support for a very importance cause”.
“Thank you for organising such a fantastic event which has been continuing for 20 years with the aim of raising awareness on cancer and also helping cancer research,” the President said.
Pointing out the importance of scientific studies and the collation of data and statistics with regards to cancer, the President stated that “there is great sensitivity shown by members of the public because of the nature of this illness and steps that can be taken with regards to helping people live healthier lives, preventing cancer through lifestyle and diet changes, and supporting scientific studies with the objective of enhancing effective medical treatment as much as possible”.
A stand of the Science and Health Committee formed under the auspices of the Presidency, which aims to raise awareness and to give information on cancer related issues, was also present at the event.
President Tatar said: "With this walk, we are once conveying a very important message: We should allocate importance to living a healthy lifestyle. We should take steps to lead a healthy lifestyle through sports and keeping active and to make appropiate changes to our diet. All of these can contribute to preventing cancer,” the President said.
President Tatar also highlighted the importance of having a daily walk routine, adding: “What can be healthier than taking daily routine walks in nature, and enjoying the beautiful colourful flowers and observing nature and wildlife? Having a routine sports activity and simply taking daily walks will help defend the body from all types of diseases.”
President Tatar said he maintains a daily routine of undertaking sports activities and frequent walks in the hillsides in Girne.
The President also called on smokers to stop smoking cigarettes and e-cigarettes, which he said contributes to many health issues, as explained by doctors and experts.
