Mr Stewart, who has recently replaced Ms. Elizabeth Spehar, addressed the annually held end-of-year reception held at the Ledra Palace Hotel within the UN Buffer Zone of Nicosia on Tuesday evening.  The two leaders had last met in September in New York at an informal lunch hosted by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

At the reception, the two leaders also had the opportunity to meet with the co-chairs of the technical committees – tasked with improving the daily lives of the two Peoples across different fields on both sides – the ambassadors and other representatives who are supporting their workings, and high-level UN personnel.

Mr Stewart, in his welcoming remarks, emphasised their wish for both sides to find a mutually acceptable way forward in relation to the Cyprus issue, and he also commended the achievements reached by the technical committees – specifically the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage; Technical Committee on Health; and Technical Committee on Telecommunications.

President Tatar is a firm supporter of the enhancement of the workings of all technical committees which is of benefit to the two sides in Cyprus and sees this as an important mechanism which not only contributes to the easing of the daily lives of the two peoples, but also acts as a bridge to facilitating the effective cooperation between the two sides, while helping to build confidence.
