President Ersin Tatar attends the inauguration ceremony held to declare the ancient Turkish city of Bursa as the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World 2022
“Bursa is among the most important and largest cities of the Republic of Türkiye”
President Ersin Tatar has called for a “strengthening of relations” between the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Turkish world.
The President made the call during a speech he delivered at the opening ceremony that was held in the city of Bursa which was declared as the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World 2022 by the International Organisation of Turkic Culture (TÜRKSOY).
President Tatar, who conveyed the greetings of the Turkish Cypriot people and expressed that he is happy to meet with officials and representatives from Turkish states, said: “Bursa was the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, and is one of the most important and largest cities of the Republic of Türkiye known for its successful industrial and agricultural sectors and trade. Declaring Bursa as being the Capital of Culture of the Turkic World is an appropiate and correct decision.”
Expressing that the Republic of Türkiye is a powerful state in the world, President Tatar said that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan “has taken courageous and significant steps on the Russia-Ukraine issue and is working to bring peace and prosperity to the region”.
Refering to the Cyprus issue, President Tatar said: “The Turkish world, our brothers and sisters, are aware of what has happened in Cyprus and the attrocities committed against the Turkish Cypriot people who had to defend themselves in order to exist as one of the co-owners of the island. In the face of systematic attacks on 103 Turkish Cypriot villages between 1963 to 1974 as part of the aspiration to annex the island of Cyprus with Greece, the Republic of Türkiye exercised her obligations as a guarantor power and intervened. Despite many plans and proposals that aimed for an equality-based settlement in Cyprus, the Greek Cypriot side have rejected each plan and proposal, and Turkish Cypriot people continue to be subject to unjust isolation through no fault of their own and despite the promises to end the restrictions preventing us from being able to trade directly and travel directly to and from our own country.
“Dear brothers and sisters, we proclaimed our own State with the support of Motherland Türkiye. We are the flag bearers of Turkishness in the eastern Mediterranean. It is important that we stand in solidarity and that the relations are developed and strengthened between the TRNC and the Turkish world. We are cooperating as the TRNC with the Republic of Türkiye to protect our legitimate rights in the eastern Mediterranean,” the President said.
President Tatar stressed that they would be happy for the TRNC to take its rightful place as a State with observer status in the Organisation of Turkish States.
Pointing out the importance given by the Turkish Cypriot people to the strengthening of the relationship with the Turkish world, President Tatar said that Turkish Cypriots would be happy to be a part of the Turkish community of states.
Minister of Tourism and Culture Fikri Ataoğlu, Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Türkiye Binali Yıldırım and officials from TÜRKSOY attended the opening ceremony which was held at the Bursa Tofaş Sports Hall.
