President Ersin Tatar chaired the High Coordination Board meeting where evaluations were made on the Ukraine-Russia war: “Our hope is for this crisis to come to an end”
The Ukraine-Russia war was discussed at a meeting of the High Coordination Board that was chaired by President Ersin Tatar at the Presidency.
The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu, Cyprus Turkish Peace Forces (KTBK) Major General Sezai Öztürk, Security Forces (GKK) Major General Zorlu Topaloğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hasan Taçoy, Presidential Undersecretary Okan Donangil, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary İsmet Korukoğlu and Special Representative to the President, M. Ergün Olgun.
President Ersin Tatar stated that at the meeting they had evaluated the latest developments in the region as well as the Ukraine-Russia war.
“An evaluation was made on the possible effects of the war on the TRNC and the whole island”
President Tatar stated that the current world's agenda is the war between Ukraine and Russia that started in the morning, along with the increase in oil prices and the increase in foreign currency against the Turkish Lira. He added that they evaluated the possible effects all of these developments could have on the TRNC.
Stating that they were also following the evaluations of the Republic of Turkey, President Tatar said that discussions on the effects of the war on the TRNC and the whole island were taken up.
“Our wish is for this crisis to come to an end,” President Tatar said. “Innocent civilians suffer the most in war and humanity is always the loser in wars.”
“The ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia has reinforced the importance of the concepts of peace, tranquillity and security”
Expressing his wish for the crisis to come to an end and for life to return to normal, President Tatar noted that the biggest impact of the war on the country will be economic.
“Negative economic impact will be felt globally and indeed in the TRNC,” President Tatar said. “The price of oil will increase and there will be an increase of foreign currency, which are serious issues. The ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia has reinforced the importance in concepts of peace, tranquillity and security”.
“We are putting forward a struggle to protect the legitimate interests of the TRNC in order for Turkish Cypriot people to live in stability and security”
Drawing attention to the inherent sovereignty rights of the Turkish Cypriots emanating from the 1960 treaties, President Tatar reminded that Turkey is one of the three guarantors, adding that she had intervened in Cyprus in order to bring real peace to the island following 11 years of attempted ethnic cleansing by the Greek Cypriot side. President Tatar added that as sovereign co-owners of the island and constant rejections by the Greek Cypriot side to a solution, the Turkish Cypriot people exercised their inherent sovereign rights and proclaimed the TRNC. He explained that at present they are “putting forward a struggle to protect the rights and interests of the TRNC and for Turkish Cypriots to live in stability and security”.
"Russia has launched an attack on Ukraine that is being watched by NATO, EU and US”
President Tatar pointed to the attack on Ukraine by Russia, which he explained was being watched by NATO, EU and US.
“The US, NATO and EU, apart from imposing sanctions, have been unable to say ‘stop’ to Russia,” the President said. He added that Turkey had exercised the right of intervention in Cyprus by staging the Peace Operation in 1974, adding that since then “there has been peace and security in Cyprus. . .no one has been harmed and no major incident has taken place. We should appreciate the value of this, especially after witnessing the war now taking place in Ukraine,” he said.
