President Ersin Tatar condemns the statement made by Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission
“We doubt the good will of those who have violated the Turkish Cypriot People's entitlement to their enjoyment of basic human rights for 60 years through anachronistic and cruel isolation”
President Ersin Tatar has condemned the statement made by Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, regarding the President's participation in the 11th Summit of the Heads of State of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS) that was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic.
The written statement of President Tatar reads as follows:
“I regretfully condemn the statement made by Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, who sees himself as the guardian of contemporary values, relating to my participation in the 11th Leaders' Summit of the Organisation of Turkic States.
Whilst we have put forward a concrete approach which prioritises diplomacy, the EU has increased the dosage of its traditional pro-Greek Cypriot policy even further by pushing its limits.
We doubt the good intentions of those who have violated the Turkish Cypriot People’s entitlement to their enjoyment of basic human rights for 60 years through anachronistic and cruel isolation.
Despite paying lip service on equality, we have clearly observed the insincerity that exists with their actions.
The EU frankly needs to accept that there are two States, two Peoples and two Democracies on the Island of Cyprus. The realities on the ground cannot be changed by their rhetoric or decisions.
Those who accepted the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus as a full member within the framework of an illusion by violating their own criteria, those who took this step for political motives without the resolution of the Cyprus issue, must also accept that they imported the problem into their union.
A new and formal process will not be started until the inherent rights, namely the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot People are reaffirmed.
There is a need to develop a culture of cooperation on the Island of Cyprus. As the Turkish Cypriot Side, we are working to establish this and strive for good neighbourly relations of the two States.
I underline the fact that our State is an integral part of the Family Assembly of the Organisation of Turkic States and Turkic World, and our State will continue to be represented on every platform that we are invited to. Our struggle is great, our path is challenging, and with this awareness, we will continue to move forward with the support of Motherland Türkiye, who is always supporting us."
