President Ersin Tatar and Hakan Fidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, have arrived in Geneva to participate in the informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format, that is being hosted in Geneva by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The President, who arrived on the same airplane as that of Minister Fidan on Monday afternoon, spoke to the press where he said that he is attending the informal summit with a forward-looking and constructive approach.

“I am here to protect the rights of the Turkish Cypriot People and to hold meaningful discussions on the way forward in the Cyprus issue. It is our view that the two Sides need to look forward and not to the past, and to encourage the two Sides to cooperate,” President Tatar said.

The President added: “The process is starting. We are here to protect the legitimate rights of our People. God willing, it will be beneficial. We want to take steps that encourage the parties to cooperate without ignoring the factual realities on the ground in the Island of Cyprus.”

The informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format will start with the dinner that is being hosted by the UN Secretary-General for the Heads of Delegations and one person accompanying them, at the Intercontinental Hotel, at 7pm local time (8pm TRNC time) today.

Each Head of Delegation will have a photo taken with the Secretary-General upon their arrival at the venue prior to the dinner.

The programme will continue with bilateral meetings between the UN Secretary-General and each delegation at the Intercontinental Hotel tomorrow morning at 9am local time (10am TRNC time).  The Heads of Delegations will be accompanied by five people in the bilateral meeting with the Secretary-General.

This will be followed with the plenary session at the Palais des Nations, on the basis of a 1+5 format, starting with the speech of the UN Secretary-General, followed by the speeches of the Heads od Delegations.
A “family photo” will be taken prior to the start of the plenary session.

The plenary will start at 12pm, and is expected to conclude at 3pm local time.
