President Ersin Tatar received former UK Minister for Civil Society Brooks Newmark as part of his visit to the British capital.
Discussions at the meeting, which was also attended by TRNC Representative to London Çimen Keskin, centred on the Cyprus issue and the new vision put forward by the President for a settlement that is based on the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot People.
President Tatar, underlining that the UK is a guarantor power and has responsibilities to treat the two Sides in Cyprus on an equal footing, stated that he was in the country to explain the views of the Turkish Cypriot Side with regards to the Cyprus issue and to meet with members of the Turkish Cypriots in the UK.
Responding to comments by Mr Newmark over his support for the Turkish Cypriot cause and the struggle to end the inhumane isolation and restrictions, President Tatar said: “The Turkish Cypriot People have been governing themselves for 60 years. We are a sovereign People. The Greek Cypriot Side have rejected 15 solution plans and ideas over the past decades – most notable in 2004 in the separately held simultaneous referenda for a UN Comprehensive Solution [Annan] Plan, and again in 2017 in Crans-Montana. My two State vision is fully supported by the Republic of Türkiye and is realistic, practical and sustainable.”
President Tatar stated that he hopes the new UK Government takes a fresh view with regards to the lack of equal treatment of the Turkish Cypriot People – who have equal inherent rights.
