Within the framework of his contacts in London, President Ersin Tatar received Turkish Minister of National Education Prof. Dr. Mahmut Özer.
Turkish Ambassador to UK Koray Ertaş and TRNC London Representative Çimen Keskin were also present at the meeting, which took place at the TRNC London Representation.
Turkish Minister of National Education Özer conveyed his disappointment over the events that took place at King’s College yesterday, and condemned the act of the Greek-Greek Cypriot students.
President Ersin Tatar stated that Greek-Greek Cypriot students tend to organise such actions in an attempt to prevent the Turkish Cypriots from making their voices heard on international platform.
President Tatar noted that such unseemly acts are not acceptable in this era, particularly in a prestigious educational institution such as King's College, in London, the centre of democracy.
“The outbursts and tensions cannot stop us,” said the President Tatar. "We want a fair and sustainable agreement in Cyprus.” He pointed out that there have been two states in Cyprus for 60 years living in peace and stability.
Noting that the Turkish people in Cyprus are currently living in security and peace, President Tatar said they could not reach the desired level due to the economic embargoes imposed, but that the reality of TRNC has been accepted all over the world with the full support of Türkiye.
President Tatar said that the TRNC may not be recognized, but the two-state solution policy has made an impression in the world and he reiterated that an agreement in Cyprus must be just and sustainable.
"Nobody wishes to go back to the past in Cyprus," The President said reminding that Türkiye is always by their side.
Noting that they feel the pain of the earthquake in their hearts and this pain will never cease, President Tatar expressed his support for Türkiye and wished the wounds to be healed.
Underlining the importance of education, President Tatar said while he was waiting for Greek Cypriot youth to attend the conference and ask questions, he encountered the given act because the education in the Greek Cypriot side is carried out with church policy.
Noting that the testament of "Cyprus will be Greek" is still maintained, President Tatar emphasised that as the TRNC, they attach great importance to education, and that they will build the future with a youth in a strong spirituality and committed to national values. “It is our greatest wish and duty to develop and keep the TRNC alive,” President Tatar said.
Reiterating that they will never allow Turkish Cypriots to become a patch to the Republic of Cyprus, President Tatar indicated that he voiced their policy in the UK, which is the guarantor country and has bases in Cyprus. President Tatar explained their expectation from the UK to adopt a fair political understanding that foresees the acceptance of the two peoples and the states.
Turkish National Education Minister Özer expressed his disappointment over the acts that took place yesterday and said ‘We condemn these acts.” Stating that such an attack is unacceptable at the university where all kind of voices should be heard in a democratic way, Özer added that the Republic of Türkiye has always stood by the TRNC and they are ready to contribute for any kind of support to strengthen the TRNC.
Expressing that as the Ministry, they are in cooperation in education, Özer noted that they are working to ensure the existence and prevalence of TRNC education.
Özer said that they will continue to provide all kinds of support to increase the quality of education.
Following the meeting, President Tatar presented Özer with the book "Vision of two states in Cyprus".
