President Ersin Tatar has handed newly elected National Unity Party (UBP) Chairman Faiz Sucuoğlu the mandate to form a government. Dr Sucuoğlu, who won the leadership election of the UBP yesterday, visited President Tatar at the Presidency in Lefkoşa. 


Making a statement to the press,  President Tatar said that Faiz Sucuoğlu was elected as the chairman of the UBP and held various consultations after Ersan Saner's resignation. Stating that he met with all party leaders and independent Members of Parliament, President Tatar said that during the consultations held within the framework of his duties and authority, no one had a request that a government could be formed with the existing structure in parliament. In his previous statements, President Tatar stated that he would give the mandate of forming the government to the winner of the UBP 22nd Ordinary Congress.


President Tatar said: “Our hope is for a formation of a government. As a result, we have a budget, pandemic and economic problems ahead of us. Having an early general election is also an alternative. UBP is the largest party in the parliament and the party with the most deputies in the parliament. Currently, Dr Sucuoğlu will also evaluate the situation. The current government will continue until a new one is formed. The country cannot remain without a government.”

President Tatar stated that an evaluation should be made with both deputies and party officials on how the next process will be managed in order to stabilise the country.  He congratulated Faiz Sucuoğlu by saying that UBP completed the congress in a way worthy of itself and wished that this result would be auspicious.

Newly elected UBP Chairman Faiz Sucuoğlu also made a statement to the press, where he said: “At the end of a democratic and enthusiastic congress worthy of the UBP, I was elected as the Chairman of this great political party in the first round by our members. I thank you, Mr President, for handing me the mandate to form a new government.  We will make an evaluation with our colleagues. As you have stated, the country is currently in a serious economic crisis due to the pandemic. The most important thing for us is the preservation of the interests of our people and our country. I hope it will be beneficial for our country, and I would like to express my gratitude.”
