President Ersin Tatar receives the members of the Board of TRNC Consumers’ Association

President Ersin Tatar has received chairman Hasan Yılmaz Işık and members of the Board of TRNC Consumers' Association in commemoration of the World Consumers Rights Day.

Welcoming the delegation, President Tatar said that the association “has played an important role over the years in enabling the wheels of the economy to turn whilst also protecting the rights of consumers.”

“STRONG ECONOMY NEEDED FOR PROVISION OF PROPER AND  GOOD QUALITY SERVICES TO CONSUMERS”

President Tatar said that when the pandemic is over, as the economic life goes on the rise,  consumption will increase with investments and employment and pointed out that as economy develops, earnings and prosperity will also increase.   Drawing attention to the importance of having a sound economy for consumers to be protected by laws, President Tatar emphasised that in a strong economy, consumers can be provided with  proper and quality service.

Refering to the five-plus-UN informal meeting to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, on April 27-29, the President said that following consultations with the Republic of Turkey, “we want an agreement that is based on  two States that are in existence side-by-side, in a cooperative relationship.”

President Tatar said: “There are two peoples in Cyprus which must be respected by the other side. We are not contemplating taking a step back from this position.  If a right is not based  upon sovereignty, it is not a right.  In order for our rights to be registered, they must be based on sovereignty.”

The President said it is necessary for the conditions to be created whereby the Turkish Cypriot side enjoys the exact same international status as that of the Greek Cypriot side, adding that the “previous promises to end the isolation on Turkish Cypriots have not been kept”.

WHAT HAVE WE ACHIEVED SO FAR FOR BEING GOOD AND PATIENT

President Tatar asked “what has changed  in all these years when Turkish Cypriots have been good and patient?   They are still taking an approach that treats the Greek Cypriot side as the sole sovereignty of the island”.

Emphasising that “our policy is not one of allegiance,” the President said that the Turkish Cypriot people will “never become  patched  as a minority onto the opposite side”.

“We are putting forward an honorable policy and are protecting our state which is in an important part of the eastern Mediterranean, and we will work tirelessly together with Turkey to protect our national benefit and interests,” the President said.
