President Ersin Tatar receives UN Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenca

“We explained that the negotiation process can start upon the acceptance of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriots”

President Ersin Tatar received the Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and Americas in the United Nations Department of Political Affairs Miroslav Jenca.
President Tatar and Mr. Jenca made a statement to the press following their meeting at the Presidency that lasted more than an hour.

The President stated that Miroslav Jenca expressed that their efforts are continuing to find a solution to the Cyprus problem and for the dialogue between the two sides to continue.  President Tatar added that he informed Mr. Jenca about the process since April last year and explained to him that the official negotiation process in Cyprus can start with the acceptance of sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriots, emphasising that their views were expressed in detail at the informal 5+1 meeting held last year and that their stance has not changed.

“Confidence-Building Measures cannot invole or imply the extension of one side's authority over the other"

Stating that there have been important developments in Cyprus in recent years, regional balances and stability have become important and that they are continuing this new policy with the full support of the Republic of Türkiye, President Tatar conveyed to Mr. Jenca that the federal solution negotiations, which continued for more than 50 years, could not yield any results and that the UN was well aware of this fact. In the meeting with Miroslav Jenca, President Tatar expressed their views that Confidence-Building Measures could be discussed, which would benefit both sides, but which, he said, cannot involve or imply the extension of one side's authority over the other.

Expressing that there is a need for some innovations in Cyprus with the increasing fuel and electricity prices after the Russia-Ukraine war, President Tatar said: "As we said to [US Under Secretary of State Victoria] Nuland, I mentioned that with an interconnected electricity system from the North of Cyprus to Türkiye, and connecting to the Europe through Türkiye’s transmission, will provide great benefits to both sides in terms of electricity.”

Noting that this will be a Confidence-Building Measure that would protect the environment and prevent carbon emissions in line with UN policies, which is realistic and beneficial to the two sides, President Tatar stated that Mr. Jenca told them that he would evaluate this issue.

President Tatar stated that they conveyed to Mr. Jenca that the sides were exploring whether common ground exists in order to start formal negotiations.

"We have reiterated our policy that negotiations for a federal equality-based settlement have been exhausted. Formal negotiations for sustainable peace and stability in Cyprus and the region can be reached on the basis of the acceptance of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people,  especially with the work of the Technical Committees."
