President Ersin Tatar reacted strongly to the burning of the TRNC flags during the demonstrations in Southern Cyprus with slogans such as “Turks out of Cyprus; Girne, Güzelyurt and Maraş are ours; we will return..."
President Tatar’s statement is as follows:
“In the demonstrations held in Southern Cyprus with the organisation of the Greek Cypriot Administration on the 39th anniversary of the TRNC’s proclamation, just like every other year, we saw yet again that the Greek Cypriot hostility towards the Turkish Cypriots, TRNC and Türkiye has reached its peak.
With the encouragement given by the Greek Cypriot Administration and Greek Cypriot Ministry of Education, Greek Cypriot youth chanted slogans such as “We will return, Girne, Güzelyurt and Maraş are ours. Cyprus is Greek and Turks out of Cyprus” and TRNC flags were set on fire.
The Greek Cypriot Administration and the Greek Cypriot Orthodox Church, which brainwash their youth, injecting them with feelings of hatred and enmity towards Turks and raising racist, fascist and anti-Turkish generations are responsible for these actions. The statements made by the Greek Cypriot political parties, especially AKEL, DİSY and DİKO, have once again revealed the unchanging Greek Cypriot mentality.
Our flags are the honour and dignity of our people. Our flags are entrusted to us by our martyrs. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was established with the willpower of our people, who exercised their right to self-determination, after our ongoing struggle since 1878. The TRNC and our flags are sacred and the necessary response will of course be given to those responsible.”
