“A SETTLEMENT THAT IS BASED ON SOVEREIGN EQUALITY WILL ALSO BENEFIT GREEK CYPRIOTS”

President Tatar said that the federation contemplated was based on a single sovereignty model, adding that the Greek Cypriot side has the aspiration to form a unitary state through a federation. He added that it is important for the Turkish Cypriot people to protect their own sovereignty and rights.

The President emphasised that no solution model can be imposed on the Turkish Cypriots through economic promises, adding that a settlement that is based on sovereign equality will also benefit the Greek Cypriots. “It is not possible to exclude Turkey from the equation in respect of hydrocarbon issue. Turkey is the most powerful and leading country of the region,” he said.

“WE WILL NEVER ABANDON THE GUARANTEE OF TURKEY”

Stating that there is a “remarkable rapprochement” in the relations between the peoples of Turkey and the TRNC following his inauguration as President, Mr Tatar said that this is “providing great political and economic strength to the Turkish Cypriots”.

The President, stated that the “continued development and sustenance of the TRNC is also very important for the security of Turkey,” and added that it is “important that a solution that is based on sovereign equality is brought to the negotiations table”.

The President underlined that “a federal based settlement once again collapsed in Crans Montana, 13 years after the Annan Plan . . .Turkey will never abandon its guarantee rights.”

“MAIN GOAL IS OUR NATIONAL SURVIVAL”

President Tatar said that ever since his youth, he always maintained the need for two separate states in Cyprus. “This is the mandate afforded to me by the people who elected me. It is because of my policy of defending the need to have two separate states in Cyprus as a basis,” the President said.

President Tatar said that there are students from more than 100 countries that come to the TRNC for higher education plus tourists arriving from many different countries. “The TRNC will continue to develop and strengthen by improving its relations with friendly states,” he added.

Expressing that the TRNC today serves hundreds of thousands of people in every field from health to education and fulfils all the requirements of being a State, President Tatar stated that everyone should protect the state.

Referring to the fact that the Turkish Cypriots being one of the founding partners of the Republic of Cyprus creates an advantageous situation in favour of the Turkish Cypriots, President Tatar referred to the historical struggle of the Turkish Cypriots during their National Struggle to coexist on the island, saying: "The main goal is our national survival.”
