President Tatar meets with delegation from Lefke Development Association
President Ersin Tatar met with the President of the Lefke Development Association Hakan Oran and his accompanying delegation last week.
In his speech during the meeting, President Tatar stated that the Greek Cypriot side has insisted on a single sovereignty for years and emphasized that the concept of single sovereignty within the EU would bring along the sovereignty of the authority of the stronger side. Underlying the dangers that the Turkish Cypriots would encounter, President Tatar pointed out that an agreement on the basis of sovereign equality would eliminate all dangers for Turkish Cypriots.
“THE TURKISH CYPRIOTS HAVE BEEN SELF-GOVERNING FOR NEARLY 60 YEARS”
“An agreement based on equality could not exist in the federation model either because the other party never had a desire to share governance and wealth equally. The whole world, including the UN, is aware of this fact,” the President said.
Stating that under the current circumstances, the UN parameters may show flexibility or alterations, he reminded that the current stage now requires a two-state solution based on sovereign equality. President Tatar emphasized that the Turkish Cypriots have been self-governing for nearly 60 years and drew attention to the fact that it is not possible to eliminate.
"OUR STANCE BASED ON SOVEREIGN EQUALITY IS SUPPORTED"
Referring to Brexit in his speech, President Ersin Tatar, reiterated the importance of the sovereignty concept. He drew attention to the fact that the reason for the UK to leave the EU was sovereignty.
President Tatar noted that they met and took the opinions of academics, retired bureaucrats and non-governmental organizations prior to the 5+ UN informal meeting in Geneva at the end of the month. He expressed that the stance of the Turkish Cypriot side, based on sovereign equality with cooperation, is supported.
“FOLLOWING THE FAILURE IN CRANS MONTANA, THE FEDERAL SOLUTION HAS BEEN PUT ASIDE”
Noting that the federal solution has been put aside after the failure in Crans Montana, the President underlined the necessity of a two-state solution in terms of stability in the region. Stating that a state-to-state agreement would be sustainable, President Tatar noted that even though there is no official statement, there are supporters of these views in the international community.
“A STRONG MESSAGE GIVEN IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION"
In his speech, Hakan Oran stated that the public gave a message about how a solution should be in the Presidential election. He underlined that President Tatar is taking the views of non-governmental organizations before the 5+ UN informal meeting to be held in Geneva at the end of the month and said that this is important.
Advisor on Political Affairs Advisor Anıl Kaya and Special Advisor Muslu Akgüney were present at the meeting.
