Presidential Statement: President Ersin Tatar to receive the UN Under-Secretary General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo
President Ersin Tatar will receive the UN Under-Secretary for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo who will be visiting the island of Cyprus next week.
Prior to this visit, President Tatar will hold a meeting with the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Cyprus and UN Peacekeeping Head of Mission Colin Stewart on Friday, March 10, at 3pm, where discussions will be held on the details of the visit.
President Tatar will be meeting Under-Secretary General DiCarlo on Wednesday, March 15, at 12pm. During the meeting, President Tatar will reiterate the position of the Turkish Cypriot Side, which, as also confirmed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, is that in order to start new formal negotiations, there is a need for the two Sides to find a common ground, which is only possible with the reaffirmation of the sovereign equality and equal international status of both Sides.
President Tatar will also be underlining that outside the two Sides and the three guarantor States, the Turkish Cypriot Side opposes any thought which favours intervention by third parties including the EU, in the Mission of Good Offices of the UN Secretary-General, which will only serve to further complicate the process. Ms DiCarlo will be reminded that whilst the two Sides are continuing to explore whether common ground exists or not, the Turkish Cypriot Side supports the development of cooperation that concerns the daily life of the two Peoples which will also reflect positively in our region and that this has been conveyed by us not only verbally but also as written cooperation proposals.
Within this scope, the President will also emphasise that we expect active support from the UN in order to advance the areas of cooperation that we conveyed to the Greek Cypriot leadership through the UN Secretary-General, in a way that will ensure common benefit.
Furthermore, it has come to our attention that the Greek Cypriot leader has also requested a meeting with the UN Secretary-General under the scope of his contacts in Brussels on March 23. In the event that such a meeting is organised, the established practice and reciprocity necessitates, as was the case in June 2021, that a meeting between our President and the UN Secretary-General is also organised.
