The First Lady, Sibel Tatar: “Fight against cancer should be started before the illness, not afterwards”
First Lady Sibel Tatar, who could not take part in the cancer awareness walk organised by the Presidency staff in Lefkoşa due to having been a contact with Covid, underlined in a written statement the importance of individual measures that can be taken to promote early diagnosis, early treatment and prevention of cancer through raising awareness.

Emphasising that environmental factors are one of the most important causes of cancer, Sibel Tatar stressed that in terms of ensuring that the citizens are able to have healthy lives that they are entitled to, there is need for the State to implement the necessary legal provisions, inspections and penalties on the matters of air, soil and food as soon as possible. She stated that the struggle against cancer should be started before the illness, not afterwards.
“Due importance should be attributed to Food security, access to cancer treatment and equality”
Stating that at least a third of common types of cancer are preventable Mrs Tatar added: “importance should be given to the legal amendments regulating food safety and appropriate penalties and for everyone to have equal access to cancer treatment to be included in the relevant provisions of the respective law which is still pending in the parliament.”
Sibel Tatar sent a message to the cancer awareness walk that was held today, where she thanked Raziye Kocaismail, the chairperson of Help Those With Cancer Association (Tulips), the management and members of the association, Presidency staff, the President and members of the Presidential Science and Health Committee, and everyone who contributed to the awareness walk, and wished all our people a healthy life.
