United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has congratulated President Tufan Erhürman following his recent electoral victory. In a letter addressed to President Erhürman, the Secretary-General stated: “I am looking forward to working with you to achieve a lasting settlement in Cyprus”.
Reaffirming his “steadfast commitment to the security and well-being of the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots,” the Secretary-General said: “My good offices remain at your disposal, and the United Nations stands ready to support efforts to secure a peaceful and sustainable resolution of the Cyprus issue for the benefit of all Cypriots and greater peace in the region”.
In his letter, the Secretary-General Guterres also stressed his continuing commitment to “convening another informal meeting in a broader format in the near future”, and informed that he has instructed his Personal Envoy, Ms María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, to visit the island to initiate discussions with the leaders of the two sides.
The Secretary-General has also stated: “I encourage you to work closely with her [Ms Holguin] to chart a constructive and results-oriented path that would allow us to build on the momentum achieved in 2025 and to potentially find a mutually acceptable way forward on the Cyprus issue.”
The Secretary-General also expressed his expectation from President Erhürman to collaborate with Mr Khassim Diagne, the Special Representative and Head of Mission of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus.
