President Ersin Tatar evaluated the signing of an agreement between the New Jersey National Guard and the Ministry of Defence of the Greek Cypriot Administration within the framework of the National Guard Bureau’s State Partnership Program.
The written statement is as follows:
“Following the decision to lift the arms embargo on the Greek Cypriot Administration last year, the signing of a military agreement carries the potential of escalating tensions in the island of Cyprus and the region, particularly at a time when there is need for regional and global stability.
As I underlined during the visit of United States Ambassador Julie D. Fisher to the Office of the Presidency, it is essential for humanity at large to take steps that serves stability, and to refrain from taking action that has the opposite effect by introducing new regional and global complications.
In addition to the US lifting the arms embargo, Greek Cypriot officials have construed the access of Greek Cypriot military officers to international training programmes under the Acquisition and Cross Services Agreement (ACSA) as a success story. This has once again clearly exposed the real intention of the Greek Cypriot leadership.
Unfortunately, we cannot reasonably expect this obsessive mentality to contribute to Cyprus and to wider regional and global stability. However, this mentality has enabled “target shooting” exercises with the use of guns by deputies and priests in Southern Cyprus, instilling hatred against Turkish Cypriots through their educational curriculum, and paving the way to the entry of Neo-Nazi organisations into their legislature.
The increasing armament activities of the Greek Cypriot side is an indication that the active and effective guarantor rights of Motherland Türkiye is indispensable for the Turkish Cypriot People, and with the support of Türkiye, we will respond to all actions that jeopardise the security balance, which poses a threat to the life and property of the Turkish Cypriot People on the island.
My call to the US administration is to refrain from taking such steps that will not serve stability in Cyprus and to follow an equal and balanced policy towards both sides in Cyprus."
