President Ersin Tatar met with Turkish Cypriot representatives, civil organisations and youth groups that are based in the UK, within the framework of his contacts in London.

President Tatar also introduced the book titled “The Vision for Two States in Cyprus” at an event held at the TRNC Representative Office.
The President, addressing civil organisations and youth groups, underlined the “importance I give to your continued support in our struggle for fairness and justice as Turkish Cypriot People”.

“Your support for our new two State policy that is based on the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot People is very important,” the President said. “Your unity, solidarity and love for your country is important. We will never give up our struggle to exist as a sovereign and equal People in Cyprus, because this is our inherent right, irrespective of where we live in the world,” President Tatar said.

President Tatar explained that a new book, titled “The Vision for Two States in Cyprus” has just been published in the English language, which puts forward the “arduous, sincere and constructive efforts of [President Tatar] and the negotiations team”. President Tatar added that the book justifies with examples why a new basis is needed for a settlement in Cyprus which is based on the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot People. “Two States in Cyprus has always been my vision. It allows both sides to exist in peace, in cooperation, to build bridges of trust,” President Tatar added. “This book explains why negotiations for a federal solution has been exhausted and gives reasons as to why we are seeking a fresh new realistic and practical basis.”
Explaining that he has held important meetings with numerous UK Parliamentarians including MP’s and House of Lords members, the President said he has also met with numerous prominent media and press officials.

“In all of my meetings, I have conveyed the perspective and view of the TRNC,” the President said. “When the facts and realities are explained, there is an arousal of sympathy to our cause. Because the Turkish Cypriot People have not been the side that prevented a settlement. We have explained that former late Greek Cypriot Foreign Minister, Nicos Rolandis, has written that the Greek Cypriot side have rejected 15 federal-based settlement plans. They also rejected the UN Comprehensive Settlement [Annan] Plan in 2004 in the separately held simultaneous referenda by a massive majority, whilst the Turkish Cypriot People accepted it and despite this, none of the promises to end our isolation were kept by international actors. Another process, in an attempt for an equality-based settlement, again collapsed in Crans-Montana in 2017, because of the Greek Cypriot Side’s refusal to share power and prosperity on the basis of equality with the Turkish Cypriot People,” President Tatar said.

President Tatar explained that in his meetings with British Parliamentarians and members of the press, he explained that former UK Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, who was serving in office in 2004 when the plan was rejected by the Greek Cypriot Side, stated in an interview that he had “kicked himself” at being deceived by the Greek Cypriots, who a week later acceded to EU membership in the name of the whole island, whilst Turkish Cypriots who voted for a settlement, were left out in the cold.

“This is the magnitude of injustice we are all facing”, the President said. “The side that has rejected a settlement for 60 years have been rewarded, and the side that has supported a settlement, continues to be subjected to inhuman isolation and restrictions and remains unrecognised. However, we will persist in our policy because we are Turkish Cypriots, we will not bow down to these injustices, and we will continue to explain our story in the hope that freedom and fairness for our people will prevail,” President Tatar said.
